So, your girl did a stupid thing. I had the best of intentions, but as we all know, the law of unintended consequences doesn’t really take intention into account.
I won’t detail it. Let’s just say, I made a lot more work for us, which we really didn’t need right now. Or ever. And yeah, I’m going to be maulding over this all weekend.
Also, it’s kind of killed my desire to write anything. It’s just a bit too healthy to be a chosen coping mechanism. But I shall soldier on and indulge in less healthy alternatives this evening.
This has been a fairly standard week. I had a lot of meetings. I spent time at lunch with cute dogs. (I mostly managed to dress appropriately for boisterous dogs who like to play outside.)
There was no DMJ session this week. One of the facilitators was ill, so we will have to make it up at a later date. It was also voting day, so I spent 30 minutes in line waiting to do my civic duty.
Before I screwed up, I finished the proof files for a group of Thai booklets. Those will be published shortly, and it’s nice to have that project more than half done. It’s one of the few languages we’re working on right now that has no VCP component. It’s very strange now to work on T&M, and it’s strange that it’s strange considering T&M was the majority of my previous years at OMS.
For the rest of the week, I have been fixing templates for volumes. This is both a T&M and a VCP task. As you may know, VCP incorporates Train & Multiply booklets into the curriculum. The way we do that is by binding a selection of T&M booklets together. But there are into pages to the volume, and these are what I have been correcting. But it’s not just the InDesign files - I’m also correcting what we’ve already published and the translation files that we send to translators. Because everything we change also effects at least two other things. And there’s only so much cross referencing you can do to make sure we’re giving the same information in multiple places.
So, we all know I listen to podcasts while I’m working, right? Or I listen to YouTube videos, shows, whatever. Sometimes, it has to be music because I need to focus, and not every video is suited to that. But I usually just need something going on in the background. Sometimes I remember it, and sometimes it just goes in one ear and out the other. But occasionally something sneaks through, and I have to rewind a bit to make sure I heard what I thought I heard. Such was the case when I was listening to a podcast about Star Wars and learned about “Backstroke of the West.” (This is hyper nerdy, so feel free to skip to the end.)
Back in 2005, the final installment of the Star Wars prequel trilogy was released. I was still fairly hyped for them as a freshman in college, and I still think they are pretty good. Great story, poor execution. (If you want to know my thoughts on the sequels, I talked about them here and here. I thought I had talked about TLJ, but I may have been so traumatized that I just erased it from my mind. It was an awful film.) The third movie, “Revenge of the Sith,” is the best of the prequels. Mostly for the climactic fight between Obi-Wan and Anakin.
::chefskiss:: Anyway, I watched it then, probably rewatched it at some point in the following years, and then let it ooze out of my brain to make way for other things.
But another movie was made. Deep in the fires of Chinese knockoff markets, someone discovered a bootleg of RotS that had been translated into Chinese and then back-translated into English. And then someone else had the brilliant idea to gather their friends and dub over it.
It may be one of the funniest things I’ve ever watched. And that includes the Holiday Special. (Although that one is basically an acid trip.) I watched it later that night, but I’m going to have to watch it again, because the utter nonsense is delightful.
DOOOO NOOOOT WAAAAANT!
(See, you gotta watch it to get that. Any guesses which character said it? This is also where the title comes from.)
Okay, I’ve been in the office too long tonight, so I’m going to go home and try not to run through my greatest hits of mistakes. I hope you have a better weekend than me.
Bye!
